Guests FAQ

Common questions about guest access in Missive.

chevron-rightHow can I create dedicated channels for ongoing contractors and freelancers?hashtag

You can use guest access to create dedicated "Slack-like" channels for seamless collaboration with external collaborators.

See Dedicated guest channel for step-by-step instructions.

chevron-rightCan I invite someone who already uses Missive in another organization as a guest?hashtag

Yes, you can invite people who already use Missive in other organizations as guests to your conversations.

The process is simple:

  • They receive an email invitation

  • They click the link and log in with their existing Missive account

  • They're automatically added to your conversation as a guest

They'll have limited guest permissions in your conversations while maintaining full access to their own organization.

chevron-rightCan guests be assigned conversations or tasks?hashtag

No, guests cannot be assigned conversations or tasks in Missive.

The assignment features are designed for internal team members to manage workflows and responsibilities. Guests, being external collaborators, are not part of this internal assignment system.

While guests can view tasks within a conversation they are invited to and can discuss them in the internal chat, they cannot be made responsible for a task or a conversation via the assignment mechanism.

chevron-rightCan guests reply to external messages like emails or SMS?hashtag

No, guests cannot directly reply to external messages such as emails, SMS, or messages from other integrated channels (e.g., WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger).

Guests can view these external messages if they are part of the conversation they've been invited to. They can also contribute to the discussion by posting internal chat messages to your team within that same conversation.

If a guest needs to provide input for an external reply, they should communicate this to your team members via the internal chat. A team member can then compose and send the external reply.

This distinction ensures that all external-facing communication remains under the control of your internal team members.

chevron-rightDo guests receive notifications for conversations they're invited to?hashtag

Yes, guests can receive notifications for conversations they are invited to, primarily via email.

When a guest is first invited to a conversation, they receive an email invitation. Once they accept and join, they may receive email notifications for subsequent activity in the conversation, such as new chat messages or @mentions, depending on their personal notification settings.

chevron-rightCan guests view and download attachments in conversations?hashtag

Yes, guests can view and download attachments shared in conversations they are invited to.

When a guest accesses a conversation, they have full access to all attachments in that conversation - whether those attachments were added before they joined or after. This includes:

  • File attachments in emails

  • Files shared in internal chat messages

  • Any other document or media files in the conversation

Guests can download these attachments just like regular team members. If you need to restrict access to specific files, avoid sharing them in conversations where guests are present.

chevron-rightHow do labels work for guests?hashtag

Guests can't interact with your organization's labels.

Visibility: Guests cannot see any labels applied to conversations, even if they are participants in those conversations.

Interaction: Guests also cannot add labels to conversations, remove labels, or create new labels (whether personal or organization-wide).

Label management is a feature reserved for internal team members to maintain organizational consistency.

chevron-rightWhat level of interaction can guests have with tasks in a conversation?hashtag

Guests have limited interaction with tasks within Missive conversations they are invited to:

  • View tasks: Guests can see tasks that are part of the conversation, including the task description and its status (e.g., in progress, closed).

  • Discuss tasks: They can discuss tasks by posting messages in the internal chat of the conversation.

However, guests cannot:

  • Create new tasks.

  • Edit existing tasks (e.g., change the description, due date).

  • Mark tasks as closed or reopen them.

  • Be assigned to tasks.

Task management functionalities are generally reserved for internal team members. Guests can provide input or ask questions about tasks via chat, but team members are responsible for the actual task management.
