Artificial Intelligence
Use AI to draft replies, summarize threads, and analyze sentiment.
The OpenAI integration brings AI-powered features directly into Missive. Generate drafts, summarize long threads, translate messages, and more - without leaving your inbox.
AI requires the Productive or Business plan and an OpenAI account. See pricing.
What you can do
Generate drafts
Create reply drafts based on message content. AI can reference your canned responses to give accurate, on-brand answers.
Summarize threads
Get quick summaries of long email threads. Useful when jumping into a conversation mid-stream.
Translate messages
Translate incoming messages to your language, or translate your draft to match the recipient's language.
Fix grammar and tone
Polish your drafts before sending. Adjust tone from casual to formal, or vice versa.
Extract information
Pull out key details like dates, names, or action items from messages.
Where AI appears
On messages: Click the AI icon on any message to summarize, translate, or generate a reply.
In drafts: Select text and use AI to rewrite, fix grammar, or change tone. Or generate an entire draft from scratch.
Via rules: Automate AI actions on incoming messages - auto-summarize, auto-label, or create draft replies. See AI Rules.
API key vs ChatGPT subscription
OpenAI offers two distinct services. You need an API key for Missive - a ChatGPT subscription won't work.
ChatGPT subscription
Use ChatGPT through the web interface
chat.openai.com
Monthly subscription ($20/month for Plus)
OpenAI API
Integrate AI into applications like Missive
API key
Pay-as-you-go based on usage
Setup
Get your OpenAI API key
Create an OpenAI account if you don't have one.
Go to OpenAI Platform and navigate to Settings > API Keys.
Click Create new secret key and copy it somewhere safe - you won't be able to see it again.
(Optional) Find your Organization ID in Settings > General. You'll need this if your OpenAI account belongs to multiple organizations.
Cost and usage
OpenAI bills based on tokens processed (both input and output). Costs vary by model:
GPT-5 mini
Most daily tasks, good balance of speed and quality
$0.15-$0.60
GPT-5
Complex reasoning, detailed analysis
$2.50-$10.00
GPT-4o mini
Previous generation, still reliable
$0.15-$0.60
Real-world example: At Missive, our team of 12 people averages under $7/month using AI for daily email tasks.
Set a monthly budget limit in OpenAI to prevent unexpected charges.
Managing costs
Add conditions to AI rules - Rules that check every email can rack up costs quickly. Use conditions to limit when AI runs (e.g., only unassigned conversations, only specific labels).
Choose the right model - GPT-5 mini works great for most tasks and costs significantly less than GPT-5. You don't always need the most powerful model.
Monitor usage - Check your OpenAI dashboard regularly to understand what's driving costs.
